Castles of Ireland

Posted by Nancy Mulheron- Morrall on 5th Aug 2016

As summer seems to be never ending here in Scottsdale, I find myself dreaming of castles in Ireland.

Castles, whether well taken care of or in ruins, are magical places in Ireland. Each step you take, you are reminded of those who have come before you, whose footsteps you are walking in. Some castles still bear the battle wounds of the past, while others have been renovated into 5 star hotels. I have listed my favorites along with pictures that bring back good memories!

Rock of Cashel, Co. Tipperary, Ireland

The views from the Rock of Cashel are stunning. No wonder this castle is one of the most visited in all of Ireland. We visited here in January of 2014. The nice thing about visiting Ireland in January, is having the countryside practically to yourself. Except for the photo bomber in the picture.

Trim Castle, Co. Meath

Trim Castle is the largest Norman castle in Ireland. Located along the River Boyne, it is most famous in recent years as the castle in featured in the movie, Braveheart. The area around Trim, is rich in history including the Battle of the Boyne.  We seem to always make time to return to this castle every time we are in Ireland.

Kilkenny Castle, Co. Kilkenny

Kilkenny is one of our favorite towns in Ireland. Kilkenny Castle is located right in the middle of their downtown area located on the banks of the River Nore. The grounds and castle have both been restored and the gardens are not to be missed when you visit. It is beautiful in spring time when the garden is in full bloom!

Bunratty Castle, Co. Clare

For a full castle experience for both adults and children, Bunratty Castle is the place to visit! The castle itself is well maintained and decorated just as you would find it in the 15th century. Along with the castle are the grounds of the castle that have been made to replicate a village complete with a pub! The gardens and farm animals complete the scene to show you what it would be like to live in the area hundreds of years ago.   They also offer a medieval banquet dinner select nights.   Don't forget to stop in next door at Durty Nelly's pub for a pint and check out all the law enforcement badges from all over the world!
